The Late Mr Arthur Magerman – A tribute

Webmaster Latest NewsNewsSouth Africa

The passing of Mr Arthur Magerman, a renowned community leader and stalwart, came as a great shock to the management and staff of Afrika Tikkun.  We offer our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Arthur attended the Alexandra Catholic School in Second Avenue and became one of the first matriculants from the school.  He studied at Wits where he obtained a law degree – again one of the first in Alexandra.

He used his legal expertise to defend the downtrodden, some of whom were caught in the midst of the township social ills and became victims of their own circumstances.

The late Mr Magerman channeled a large portion of his life into community work in Alexandra township through the formation of various socially uplifting community programmes, most notably the non-governmental organisation Phuthaditjaba, joining forces with another community leader, Rev Linda Twala.

The late Mr Magerman, Rev Linda Twala together with Afrika Tikkun, developed Phuthaditjaba Community Centre through a joint venture and provided community development and support services to the Alexandra Township community in areas of care giving, social services, youth skills development and entrepreneurial activities.  Arthur’s involvement and participation in these endeavours added strength and great value to the programmes.
