What is Early Childhood Development (ECD)?
Early childhood development refers to the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development of a child from birth to age five. These early years are critical for a child's brain development, laying the groundwork for future learning, behaviour, and health.
Intervening during this stage with targeted, high-quality early childhood education has long-term benefits: children are more likely to succeed in school, earn higher incomes, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. The evidence is clear — early intervention delivers a powerful return on investment, both for individuals and for society.

ECD in the 2030 Agenda
The global community has recognised the transformative power of early childhood education. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4.2 calls for universal access to quality early childhood development, care, and pre-primary education by 2030.
To track progress toward this goal, the ECDI2030 Index was created. Developed by UNICEF and global experts, this measurement tool assesses children aged 24–59 months on developmental milestones using input from primary caregivers.
