KK Sibongakonke is a Director at Thomson Reuters’ Financial and Risk Africa business (now known as Refinitiv Africa) where he is responsible for the Africa business’ Strategic Accounts. Also, he is our Afrika Tikkun Ambassador for 2019, and is now on a roadshow across the centres.

On his first roadshow at Wings of Life Diepsloot, he engaged and interacted with over 70 young people interested to follow in his foots steps. His story began when he was just five years old. He sold sweets at school to survive, now he continues to inspire more young people to become entrepreneurs and to believe in themselves.

His tips on success for young people:

1. Think the 4th Industrial Revolution and how your career can partake in this great opportunity to change your life.
2. Inspire to be the change you want to be in your centre, community and country – it only determines how far you want to reach in life as a responsible citizen.

3. Always associate yourself with people that are looking forward to support your potential and promote you to opportunities that can change your life.

4. Lastly, keep on networking and you will find your gate way.

‘KK Fumba’ resonates with many other global leaders that are game changers, and worthwhile to listen to.

What to do after graduation- Tips to connect with a perfect opportunity for academic or employment ventures you dream off.

Recently, our Career Development Programme CDP first class held their graduations across all Centres. It has been an intense three months of hard work and preparations. Thank you to all our CDP facilitators that ensured that the class learns as much as it can and that it gained so much ground breaking experience. Now, all our new graduates are geared to enter the world of work through assistance in placement opportunities at the upcoming Alumni Day Career Expo, and they can access business and job opportunities.

According to many reliable sources around the world there are many ways you can use in order to move to the next step after graduation:

1. Be Career Adventurous – Seek to attend many career and business expos as much as you can and provide your curriculum vitae on site as you network with exciting presenters at a seminar, expo or conference.

2. Meet up with your Peer Group and brainstorm ideas that can use your newly acquired skills and knowledge. Meet up with your network contacts and set up presentation and proposal meetings to win your opportunities – this works for those that would like to start up community projects and small businesses.

3. Find a mentor in your field- Straight away notify your mentor that you are available for job shadowing and reach out to connections and place yourself for a golden opportunity in Learnerships. Remember to ensure that you become an asset for a potential job in the company or institution while on a learnership.

4. Review your Curriculum vitae for excellence – Now that you have acquired CV preparation skills, review your CV and send it to someone you trust to re-review it for excellence.

5. Lastly, prepare your portfolio of evidence on all the content that you learned at the Career Development Programme. Set it up for an excellent interview session.

Good luck for your new venture. Please ensure to connect with your Alumni Leaders and Career Development Managers at your respective centres to register for the Alumni Programme in order to attend the Alumni Day Career Expo on the 15th June 2019, at Civic Centre in Johannesburg.

“I’m a business woman now”. Lilizwi is empowered to start her own business.

Lilizwi Nodliwa (25) is a single mother and comes from a big family of nine members. Being one of the breadwinners, life has not necessarily been easy for her as she was unemployed for a long time. Lilizwi has been looking for employment for a while- unfortunately, she was often rejected by various companies. She has also undergone a self-discovery journey whereby she tried to explore her talents and skills. Going through this journey, she expected to discover what exactly she was passionate about and eventually pursuing a career in that field. She later joined the Career Development Programme at Mfuleni. She has an innovative and creative spirit and wishes to give bac to the community. The ‘Ready to Work’ programme aided in developing her creative mind, she was well informed on various business opportunities and she also acquired people and entrepreneurial skills.

Her passion for children sparked her passion to establish a day care centre in her community.  She is already in partnership with SEDA (Small Enterprise Development Agency) and Learn to Live- an organization that joins communities to improve the quality of life through education and healthcare. More than her social entrepreneurial goal she is also a student at the University Of Stellenbosch Business School and is excited to graduate in October. The very passionate Lilizwi said “In future, I want to create a platform in our communities whereby the youth will learn new innovative ways of living and unlearn some theories or religious ways of doing things in education… I want to promote creativity.” Lilizwi expands her gratitude to Afrika Tikkun and the CDP for planting the seed of empowerment, she now looks forward to growing as an individual and as an entrepreneur.

Your first Impression is everything – Tips for your first Interview

According to brand experts, looking good at work is very important, to at least think through how your wardrobe is affecting your personal brand and how you’re perceived by others.  Many unemployed young people do not know where to start or who to ask when they prepare for their first interview.

The AT Alumni programme launched the ‘Look good for work closet’ dedicated to providing good second hand clothes to assist our young people to prepare for interviews and work.

King David High School, our Act of Random Kindness Campaign partner and donor, committed to donating good clothes to all the Johannesburg Centres. The Look Good For Work Closet will continue up till December 2019. The Look Good for Work Closet’s next stop will be Wings of Life in Diepsloot for May 2019. Get ready, ‘Siyeza’, we are coming.

Here are a few tips that can assist you in preparing for a successful interview and work wardrobe.

  1. Understand what’s appropriate in your industry
  2. Make sure your clothes fit
  3. Do not wear strong perfume or cologne
  4. Wear well-kept, polished shoes
  5. Wear rich colours to portray authority
  6. Avoid neon colours and overly flashy clothes
  7. Do not be too sexy
  8. Do not over- accessorize
  9. Facial hair should not overwhelm your face
  10. A goatee is rarely a good idea

Alumni News Letter March 2019

YOU SPOKE, WE LISTENED

We look back to 2018 and there is so much we are grateful for, especially for all our Alumni Members. During the course of the year we were able to reach and register 1000 Alumni on our page, and engaged them in different interactive activities. These activities included, launching the programme earlier this year, and addressing youth challenges on various leadership trainings and camps.

We are excited that the programme succeeded in inaugurating its leadership committees around the centres. It comprises young men and women who are determined to work together in order to uplift their lives through career directed initiatives and engagements.

In 2019, we want to double the numbers of our membership to 2000 in all our career programmes within Afrika Tikkun. We encourage all 2018 matric students to register online. Your membership will give you crazy useful information for academic, career and various other opportunities. Every opportunity is designed to ensure that our Alumni is consistently exposed to the right people, the right opportunities and up to the moment information that will keep our alumni ahead of current trends so that they can experience success in the job market.

Recent platforms such as Bertie Lubner Week have provided extensive volunteer experiences. The 2019 ‘Pay it forward’ Campaign will promote alumni volunteerism at Afrika Tikkun. It is great for your CV, and looks even better on your academic scholarship application. We want to make it happen for you.

CELEBRATING BERTIE LUBNER WEEK WEEK IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Over 100 Alumni members organized a successful Bertie Lubner Week as well as Human Rights Day celebrations.

This year’s celebrations focused on providing an opportunity for alumni members to give back and celebrate the philanthropic legacy of Bertie Lubner. Bertie’s legacy has touched many young people through Afrika Tikkun’s Cradle-to-Career 360 model. Each programme is centered in providing education, civic empowerment and basic needs that are everyone’s human rights.

According to one determined and shining alumni member, 22 year old Edwin Mohlama from Diepsloot, he expressed that the day made him feel really good to be part of a team that is willing to give back to the organization. Edwin completed matric at a local school in the community. He joined the alumni programme in July 2018 and is now an organizer at the Wings of Life Centre.

When asked about his thoughts regarding Bertie Lubner Week and Human Rights Day, he acclaimed that it was refreshing to celebrate and honour the vision that Bertie Lubner had for young people. He believes that every person has a basic human right to education, not only that but to have good quality education. Khanya Sibanda, a 20 year old Alumni President, shares the sentiment and belief that being a leader means more than just the role, being an organizer of a future is easy when you say you are, however the work paves a different venture.

Edwin’s volunteering and giving back spirit means a lot to him, and he hopes it can inspire many young people to do the same. Volunteerism provides a unique experience in understanding the purpose of developing young people.

Lastly, Edwin’s perspective is that young people should be part of the change they want to see in their communities and get themselves involved in celebrations such as the Bertie Lubner Week.

Khanya valued all the volunteerism that took place during the week and said, ‘giving back was their end game because Bertie Lubner was all about philanthropy’.

Alumni October 2018

Dear Alumni

“Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.” – George S. Patton

Ntsiki – ‘African Child’

To those writing exams this month, we say a special prayer and wish you clarity of mind, strength of heart and determination of purpose. We are so proud of all our alumni members! You are on your way to becoming the best that you can be.

International Day of the Girl Child acknowledges the challenges faced by girls around the world and promotes the empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. This year, we decided to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child by celebrating the voice of one of our young women – Ntsiki Khunju.

Pookolala and Gogo” is the story of how three generations of women are fighting for their right to life and everything that means. Ntsiki’s spoken word poem African Child was written to tell their story and celebrate the potential of all young people. Ntsiki is an Alumni, an activist and a poet. African Child was released on Soundcloud on International Day of the Girl Child to raise awareness about girl child poverty in South Africa. Listen Here

Lucky’s Success Story

Lucky started out his life in rural Limpopo. His mother was unemployed and his father had died. Hunger was a daily reality for him and his four siblings; and if it was not for the ingenuity of his mother and the kindness of neighbours, he would not have a story to tell.

Seeking any opportunity for work Lucky came to Alexandra, Johannesburg with his two siblings. One day, at a time when he was “close to giving up”; he heard about Afrika Tikkun and the exciting prospect of travelling overseas to compete in a triathlon upon registration at Afrika Tikkun’s Phuthaditjaba Centre, Alexandra.

When he returned from Germany, Lucky successfully completed his learnership and work experience. He began discovering his passion – training, motivating and inspiring young people. He continued thriving within Afrika Tikkun and was appointed to work in the career and placement arm of Afrika Tikkun. This gave him the opportunity to interface with many other companies.

Watch this video to learn more about the tremendous opportunity Lucky received next and what he is doing today

Alumni Events

Several illuminating and informative Alumni workshops took place recently at Uthando Centre, Arekopaneng Centre, Zolile Malindi Centre and Wings of Life Centre:

At the workshops various interesting, thought-provoking and sometimes controversial topics were broached. Some of the themes discussed and debated included; gender equality and causes of gender-based violence, career guidance and employment opportunities, drug and substance abuse awareness, community development, health matters, and more. All the workshops were well attended and the feedback from attendees was constructive and positive. Were you there? Tell us what you thought about?

You stand the chance of earning one of ten pairs of tickets (one for you and one for your bestie)to attend the Mandela 100 Global Citizen Festival on 2 December 2018 at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

  • 3-hours of community service at Afrika Tikkun or at any recognised local community organisation or church

You can help out at Afrika Tikkun or any other recognised organisation or church in your area – we only ask that when you are done, an appointed representative of the organisation signs a form to confirm that you have effectively and productively volunteered three (3) hours. Alumni Events

At the end of August, and throughout the month of September 2018, the Alumni were kept busy with various engaging and interactive events and activities:-

Alumni Workshops

Two Alumni workshops were held at the Afrika Tikkun centre at Mfuleni, Western Cape and at a venue in Pretoria, Gauteng respectively, in order to clarify and unpack the purpose of the programme, assess what has been done thus far and define the objectives of this programme. It was established that the Alumni Programme differs from the other Afrika Tikkun programmes in that it targets people who have graduated from these programmes. The workshops were also used to develop a structure for the Alumni programme that is democratic and participatory.

Career Development Programme Review Workshop – 4 September 2018

Afrika Tikkun is in the process of evaluating and innovating its career development and placement (CDP) programme that currently provides ICT training, career guidance, job-readiness training, as well as specialised training in the retail, hospitality and IT (coding) sectors. In addition, the CDP programme sources job placement opportunities for those trained that includes entry-level jobs, Learnerships, internships and work experience placement opportunities with our partners.

As key stakeholders in the Afrika Tikkun CDP, 20 Alumni, who are graduates of the CDP programme, were invited to participate in this evaluation and ideation workshop.

The workshop was facilitated by Youth Lab in order to illicit and consolidate the insights and experiences of the programme by our Alumni. One of the key outcomes of the workshop was to gain a deeper understanding of the needs and aspirations that our young people have for the future of the programme to ensure that the programme meets its core mandate of youth career development and employment.

One of our core programmes is the Career Development programme (CDP) that aims to provide skills to our young people, preparing them for the world of work and placing them in employment where possible. The Alumni Programme is a part of this objective, as it furthers our goal to curb youth unemployment, currently a global challenge.

The Alumni Programme is a way of making sure that no one falls through the cracks by connecting and engaging with Alumni at regular events. The organisation is then able to develop a better sense of the needs and value expectations of our young people. Through its platforms of communication and engagement, alumni can network, support, share opportunities and continue to grow together toward economic empowerment.

The objective of the Alumni event was to create a platform for continuous engagement of Alumni post graduating from our skills training programmes and pending placement. This will ensure continued refreshing of skills taught and acquired, as well as empowerment. The Alumni programme will hopefully contribute towards re-enforcing the behavioural values of our young people in the long term.

Ms Marcia Lebambo, was the keynote speaker at the event, and was recently recognised as one of 100 Mandelas, by Media24. Originally, from Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, Marcia is a 30-yearold woman currently employed as a Lecturer at the University of South Africa. She previously worked as a Residence Manager, Senior Campus officer and a Lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology. She also worked as Current Affairs Presenter for the Campus Radio TUTFM. Ms Lebambo also founded the first TUT Soshanguve Campus Residence Newsletter called Residence Life.

She is involved in many community development projects through her Foundation, the Marcia Lebambo Foundation. One is a campaign that deals with teaching learners in rural and township schools, reading and writing skills using a popular competition called Spelling BEE. She recently completed her PhD studies in Rural Entrepreneurship Development with Tshwane University of Technology Business School, and has published papers in journals and written book chapters. Marcia has presented papers in countries such as Tanzania and Austria. Her previous qualifications include:

  • Master’s Degree in Entrepreneurship
  • National Diploma: Administrative Management
  • B-Tech Strategic Management
  • B-Tech Public Management

She is a Director of a company called Mashakoane consultancy; that helps students with postgraduate studies and research and is very passionate about developing young women especially in rural areas through Entrepreneurship and Education.

In her talk, Marcia tackled issues of personal branding, goal setting, overcoming challenges as well as entrepreneurship. Not only were the topics relevant to the young women, they were able to gain an understanding of where they need to go to get the assistance they need to take the next step in their careers.

Arekopaneng Event

Proud to be a Woman

The Arekopaneng Centre hosted their Women’s month Alumni event on 16 August 2018, targeting young women who were previously part of Afrika Tikkun’s programme. Since the launch of the Alumni programme we still have a mission to bring our young people closer to our Centres, post-graduation.

The theme of the event was “Proud to be a Woman”, with all women present wearing all black and a doek, symbolising that they are proud to be African women even when faced with adversities. All the invited speakers were present (Rhiza Babuyile, Siyanqoba, Ke Moja, as well as a representative from a local Mobile Clinic). The objective of the day was to educate women around issues of health, abuse, women empowerment and women in business.

Young women were given a chance to question and to contribute. The highlight of the day was the candlelit moment, paying respect to all women who lost their lives in abusive relationships, those who have had the courage to walk away and those who still need the strength and support to leave an abusive relationship.

The event was a success, the local mobile clinic that was present enabled young people to undergo voluntary HIV/AIDS counselling and testing, and condoms were distributed to them. Young women in the alumni programme who own their own businesses had an opportunity to showcase their work.

The event was joyful and successful, all thanks to our partners, stakeholders and Arekopaneng Centre Staff members

Dear Alumni

Legacy – that’s the buzzword at the moment. It’s good to be inspired by one, and it’s even better to build one. Think of “legacy” as both a goal and value. We hope that you are inspired through stories reflected here and challenged to consider whether what you are doing with your life is going to leave a legacy. May The Story of Babalwa Inspire You to Keep On Going.

Babalwa Ntwanambi (21) is a proud graduate of the Career Development Programme and Ready to Work course offered at Afrika Tikkun (NPO) where she learned business administration, computer

“I lost both my parents when I was in grade 7, so I could not sit and complain about not having funds to further my studies. I decided to do something to better my life after Matric and when I heard of the Career Development Programme at Afrika Tikkun, I decided to register” says Babalwa. This was a decision that opened a life-changing opportunity for her. Read her full story.

Afrika Tikkun Talent Day 2018

On Saturday 21st July 2018 at the Mfuleni Centre and on Saturday 28th July 2018 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, we held our annual Afrika Tikkun Talent Day, a day when we pay tribute to Nelson Mandela, our former Patron in Chief and a day when 2,500 children and youth from our Western Cape and Gauteng Centres meet at the Annual inter-centre sports and cultural day.

It was an exciting and spectacular day at both events and was the culmination of the children and young people’s hard work and the highlight of the year, a day to showcase their skills and talent through education, arts and culture, music and sports. Take a look at one of the highlights of the day.

The African child must understand that the world is their oyster and they must never believe anyone that tells them otherwise. We are all born to be great and although it might take longer at times greatness can be achieved if we believe and work at it,” says Billy Selekane, who visited Afrika Tikkun during Mandela Week to offer a motivational talk to our young people in Diepsloot. We love his story of perseverance, read it here.

“Today marks the beginning of a new journey towards great things as we launch Afrika Tikkun’s ICT Academy. We are creating a generation of Network Security Engineers on the pulse of technology. They are the next generation of leaders and managers in IT.” Think Tank Managing Director Tebogo Moleta. Read about it.
